female dentists exams patient getting preventative dental careKeeping your smile healthy for life starts with a dedicated oral hygiene routine and access to preventive dental care. At Cazes Family Dentistry, our Long Valley family dental practice serves smiles of all ages. We’ll give you the tools and information that you need to reduce the risk of oral diseases and unwanted tooth loss.

How Often Should I Have My Teeth Cleaned?

For people with healthy teeth and gums, we typically recommend a preventive cleaning with our Registered Dental Hygienist every six months. During these visits, we will thoroughly clean and polish all of your teeth, remove areas of buildup that are hidden just below the gumlines or between the teeth, and show you steps that you can take to improve your oral care practices at home.

Dental Checkups for Kids

Your entire family is welcome at our Long Valley dentist office. In fact, we’re open late and even on Saturdays, so that your children don’t have to miss as much school. Our warm and friendly staff are committed to ensuring that your child experiences a positive visit that empowers them with the tools they need to enjoy a healthy smile in the future.

Some of the other preventive services that we encourage for children (or adults with at-risk smiles) may involve:

Protective Mouthguards — An athletic mouthguard can protect your child against tooth damage, facial lacerations, and even concussions. Wearing a professionally fitted guard provides a higher level of protection over loose, one-size fabricated guards sold at the supermarket.

Dental Sealants — These protective layers of thin material take only a few minutes to apply, but they can protect the tooth for years. We recommend sealing areas that are more prone to decay, such as the deep grooves and pits of molars (back teeth.)

Fluoride Therapy — Mineral rich gel coats the outer layer of the tooth enamel to remineralize areas that have been weakened by acids or plaque biofilm. It’s also useful for combatting tooth sensitivity.

Treatments for Gum Disease

Once all buildup has been removed, we will monitor and re-evaluate the areas of infection about every three to four months to avoid relapse.

Since gum disease is the #1 cause of adult tooth loss, it’s important to be on the looking for signs of the infection, which often include:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush and floss
  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Heavy tartar buildup and stain
  • Receding gumlines
  • Tooth mobility
